Annual Mick O’Brien Football Tournament Sat Feb 4th
The season kicked off early last month with the annual Mick O’Brien Fe 14 football tournament. The visiting teams were St Vincent’s, Oranmore, Austin Stacks and An Gaeltacht. For the first time, the tournament was run off in one day. There was some great talent on display and some excellent games. Feile format was used. The Nemo Fe 14 team acquitted themselves well. They eventually lost the B final to a very strong Austin Stacks selection. The A final saw St Vincent’s of Dublin take on Oranmore of Galway. The game was played under lights as by this stage of the day dusk had arrived. The final was a fitting finale for the feast of football that day. The first half was very close with the teams separated by a single score at the short whistle. There were goal mouth scrambles and some fantastic individual displays. St Vincent’s were looking to complete a double of wins at this tournament having won it in 2016. But Oranmore were serious opponents. They upped their game in the second half and with the help of some well worked goals they ran out comfortable winners in the end. Overall the tournament was a huge success. All the boys had a great time and an experience they will have for life. Well done to all those in Nemo who helped make the tournament happen.

Fe 15 P1 Football League vs Valley Rovers Sat Feb 25th
Played in Trabeg an understrength Nemo team took to the field against Valley Rovers. Nemo were slow to start and Valley stormed into the game from the get go. They had the ball in the Nemo net within a minute. It didn’t look good for Nemo when they conceded a second goal shortly after this. But eventually Nemo settled. Midfielder Alan Barry started to get a grip on the game in the middle third. With lively forwards Patrick Campbell and Roger Timon in great form Nemo slowly got back into the game with some well worked points. They were just a point behind coming up to half time when Valley struck for a third goal. This left the score at 3-02 to 0-07 at the short whistle. Nemo needed a good start to the second half but it was not to be with Valley registering 1-01 to no reply inside the first 5 minutes of the half. This left Nemo with a mountain to climb. But they certainly didn’t give up. With center back Charlie Coughlan storming into the game, they slowly got back into it. However they were dealt another killer blow with another goal after a brilliant block by full back Darragh Egan. The rebound popped into the Valley full forwards hand who had the easiest of tap ins. But Nemo kept trying and they got the last score – a well taken goal. Final score was 6-05 to 2-09 in favor of Valley who deserved their win. But the Nemo boys can be proud of their efforts on the day.
Fe 13 P1 Football League vs St Finbarrs Sat Feb 25th
Played in Trabeg this was the team’s first time using the full pitch and standard goals. They started really well but this is a very good Barrs team and soon Nemo were struggling. Some point efforts from the Barrs forwards dipped under the cross bar for majors. In the end the Barrs won comfortably and it was a hard lesson for the Nemo boys. I’m sure they will learn and they will have better days ahead.
