Fe 16 A Hurling Championship SF vs Cloughduv Mon July 11th

Played in Ballinora this proved to be a rip-roaring championship game. Cloughduv were on top early on but they hit some bad wides. Nemo kept in touch with frees from the excellent Mark Cronin. Nemo soon opened up a 5 points to 2 lead. But Cloughduv kept plugging away and soon were back level at 5 apiece. But Nemo got the last score of the half to lead by 6 points to 5 at the interval. The second half started really well for Nemo. With Scott Phillpott and Finn Fhlanchadh in top form around the middle third they soon opened up a 2 point lead. Scores went back and forth and at the 3 quarter stage Nemo led by 11 points to 9. It was at this stage of the game that Cloughduv got on top. They started to find the range whereas Nemo spurned at least 4 gilt edge goal chances in the same period. Perhaps they should have taken their points. But Cloughduv rattled off 6 points without reply. At this stage Nemo needed a goal. It very nearly came from a great move involving James Allen and Mark Cronin but the Cloughduv full back line, excellent throughout, eventually cleared their lines. In the end Cloughduv won out on a final score of 16 points to 12. We wish them well in the final. This was an excellent display by a very good Nemo team. They could have won it if they were a little steadier in front of goal. Overall an excellent championship campaign by the boys. Well done to all involved.

They raced into an early lead which Nemo could never recover from. AT half time Grenagh were comfortably ahead. With the wind to their backs Nemo tore into the game in the second half. They never gave up and were unlucky not to score a few goals but for the excellent play of the Grenagh goalie. In the end Grenagh won comfortably. But to be fair to the Nemo boys they never gave up and kept trying hard right to the final whistle.

They were helped by some wayward shooting by the Nemo forwards. With 5 minutes to go the sides were level at 3-07 apiece. Douglas hit two points and it looked all over for Nemo. But right at the death they had a great goal chance only to see the ball go narrowly over the bar. That was the last play of the game and Douglas ran out winners on a final score of 3-09 to 3-08. But Glanmire hit a serious purple patch midway through the first half. They hit Nemo for 3-04 without reply and but for some great goalkeeping by Patrick Campbell it could have been worse. Eventually Nemo settled again but their shooting was wayward – partly due to the excellent defending by the Glanmire full back line. At half time the score stood at 3-05 to 0-02 for the visitors. In the second half Nemo upped it and matched their opponents throughout. They were very unlucky not to score a few goals. Eventually lively full forward Corey O’Leary found the net. But it was too late at that stage to mount a serious comeback. Final score was 4-11 to 1-07 for Glanmire who really showed why they are top of the C3 table.
