Nemo Rangers know well that their Round 5 meeting with Éire Óg in the McCarthy Insurance Group Division 1 Football League this evening has taken on a sharper edge.
Throw-in is at 7.30pm in Trabeg, and the table does not lie. Nemo sit in the drop zone on two points, Éire Óg are only one point ahead.
For Nemo, their Round 1 win over Douglas suggested a team on a mission, but three consecutive defeats have dragged them down the standings. They now find themselves needing a response — not in theory, but in practice, on their home pitch this evening.
Robbie O’Dwyer will be disappointed with how the campaign has unfolded so far, but he has been around long enough to know how these rhythms ebb and flow, and that time remains on their side.
It must be acknowledged that Nemo are without a number of key players, though most clubs are managing similar absences at this time of year.
Éire Óg, meanwhile, make the short trip from Ovens with frustrations of their own. They sit on three points — one ahead of Nemo — but their defeat to Cill na Martra last time out halted what had looked like a steady upward curve.
Like Nemo, they have been competitive but inconsistent across full games, and they will view this evening as an opportunity to reassert themselves against one of the division’s traditional heavyweights.
Éire Óg are no longer a side feeling their way in Division 1, they now come to places like Trabeg expecting to compete. Their running game, when it clicks, can trouble any defence.
For both clubs, this game is a chance to try and build momentum — particularly for Nemo — to reset, and get themselves out of the drop zone.

Nemo Rangers picked up a much-needed win as they got the better of Éire Óg in their McCarthy Insurance Division One football league clash at Trabeg on Wednesday night.
The win sees Nemo move ahead of Éire Óg at the bottom of the table.
Coming into this game, Nemo had only one win, but on the night, they were deserving winners overall, despite the best efforts of Éire Óg.
At half time the sides were level, and Nemo would have been the happier of the two, having played against a strong wind for the first 30 minutes.
Ross Corkery had opened the scoring for them before Brian Thompson and Jack Murphy replied to put the visitors in front.
But Nemo then took over and hit six points without reply.
Corkery got their second with Conor Horgan adding their third, to see them lead 0-3 to 0-2 with eight minutes gone.
Dara O’Sullivan added another, and Corkery got his third to stretch their lead further.
By the time 13 minutes were played, they were 0-7 to 0-2 in front, with Horgan and O’Sullivan on target again.
But credit to Éire Óg, they hit back with Jerome Kelleher landing a two-pointer to reduce the gap.
Horgan, Tim O’Brien, and Corkery responded for Nemo, to make it 0-10 to 0-4.
Again, Éire Óg upped their game and finished the half strongly to draw level.
Two apiece from Murphy and Thompson made it 0-10 to 0-8, before Oisin O’Shea landed their second two-pointer to see the sides level at half-time.
Early points from Jack O’Brien and O’Sullivan extended Nemo’s lead, before Kelleher and Colm Clifford replied for the visitors.
With 44 minutes gone, Nemo were in front by 0-16 to 0-12, before Shane Burke scored their goal to put them well in control.
O’Sullivan added a point, but again Éire Óg hit back, with Sean Hurley setting up Kelleher for their goal, to make it 1-17 to 1-12.
Hurley added a point and hit another from a free to close the gap.
Nemo responded through Stephen Cronin and Eoin Nation to seal the win to move out of the bottom two of the table.
