NEMO RANGERS 2-6 MIDLETON 1-4

Tom O'Sullivan's article in the Cork Examiner after Nemo Rangers defeated Midleton in the Intermediate Championship Final in Pairc Ui Chaoimh on the 14th of September 1980.

Nemo Rangers bridged a gap of 54 years in winning the Cork Intermediate football championship at Páirc Uí Chaoimh yesterday but that was the only significant feature of an otherwise drab and unentertaining game.

Their opponents Midleton could so easily have won after dominating the first half while playing against the breeze. However, they allowed Nemo through for a simple goal on the stroke of half time which reduced their lead to two points and they were never really in the game in the second half.

WASTED

Scoring opportunities were wasted by both sets of forwards in the first half and each team hit the upright twice before the first point was scored.

This first score only came in the 14th minute after a Ger Glavin free had hit the upright and Willie Glavin pointed the rebound.

Three minutes later Midleton went four points clear when Ger Glavin banged home a goal from the penalty spot. Approaching half time Midleton had worked up a 1-3 to 0-1 lead before presenting their opponents with a gift goal.

KEPT IN PLAY

It came after a cross ball from Billy Sheehan, which was going wide, was kept in play by the keeper. He blocked the ball down but did not hold it and Jimmy Barrett seized the opportunity to hit home a goal.

The goal had a shattering effect on Midleton for they never played with the same confidence in the second half. Nemo pegged away slowly at Midleton’s lead and after 20 minutes they held a two point lead. After another five minutes Midleton had their first score of the half.

With only a point between the sides the final minutes promised an exciting climax but it was not to be and Jimmy Barrett confirmed Nemo’s position with another point and a last minute goal.
