Seamus Coughlan Under 15 Memorial Hurling Tournament
Seamus Coughlan was part of the Nemo minor teams that claimed a double of county titles in 1970. He went on to captain both the Cork Hurling and Football Minor teams in 1971. Cork beat Kilkenny 2-11 to 1-11 in the hurling final but lost out in the football final to Mayo on a scoreline of 2-15 to 2-07.
Seamus Coughlan’s Senior Football Championship career with Nemo Rangers spanned 16 years, from 1972 to 1987. As a forward, he made his championship debut against St. Michael’s in the 1972 Cork Senior Football Championship Semi Final Replay at the Cork Athletic Grounds, scoring a goal, and made his final appearance against Muskerry in the 1987 Cork Senior Football Championship Semi Final.
Seamus made 73 Senior Football Championship appearances and played in 18 finals. During his career he won eight Cork, seven Munster and four All-Ireland Senior Club Football Championship titles.
He made an immediate impact in his first season. After scoring a goal on his debut in the 1972 Cork Semi Final Replay, he scored another goal in the final as Nemo defeated UCC by 2-9 to 0-8 to claim Nemo's first Cork title. The following year he was again among the goals, scoring 1-0 in the 1973 All-Ireland Final Replay victory over St. Vincent’s of Dublin as Nemo captured their first All-Ireland club title.
Another notable championship campaign came in 1975. Seamus scored four points in the Cork Semi Final Replay against St. Finbarr’s and followed that with another four points in the final against Dohenys, helping Nemo secure another Cork Championship.
His standout individual scoring performance came against Kilrush Shamrocks in the 1977 Munster Championship Quarter Final at Kilrush. Seamus scored 1-6 of Nemo’s 3-7 total, accounting for nine of their 16 points as they advanced to the Munster Semi Final.
In total, Seamus scored 16-95, or 143 points, across his championship career.
Seamus passed away in February 2013 at the age of 59. The tributes paid to him at the time reflected the enormous contribution he had made not only as a player, but to Nemo Rangers and Cork GAA throughout his life. Former teammates remembered him as a hugely talented and skilful footballer, a fine hurler in his younger days, and an important member of the generation that established Nemo as one of the leading clubs in the country.
His contribution to Nemo continued long after his playing career ended. He served the club at many levels, including as chairman, in numerous committee roles and as a selector with underage teams. He was also heavily involved in Cork GAA, managing the Cork County Board Clubs’ Draw for 16 years and playing an important role in its development and success. Tributes from across Cork GAA described him as a hugely respected, popular and generous figure who had a great relationship with clubs throughout the county.
Away from the GAA, Seamus had a distinguished career in the Irish Army. Originally from Ballyphehane and later living in Grange, he joined the 47th Cadet Class and rose to the rank of Commandant, serving for much of his career in Collins Barracks as well as completing overseas service with the United Nations. He was remembered by colleagues, teammates and friends as a warm, good-humoured and unassuming man who gave a great deal of his time to Nemo Rangers, Cork GAA and the wider community.
