Nemo Rangers know well that their Round 5 meeting with Éire Óg in the McCarthy Insurance Group Division 1 Football League this evening has taken on a sharper edge.

Throw-in is at 7.30pm in Trabeg, and the table does not lie. Nemo sit in the drop zone on two points, Éire Óg are only one point ahead.

For Nemo, their Round 1 win over Douglas suggested a team on a mission, but three consecutive defeats have dragged them down the standings. They now find themselves needing a response — not in theory, but in practice, on their home pitch this evening.

Robbie O’Dwyer will be disappointed with how the campaign has unfolded so far, but he has been around long enough to know how these rhythms ebb and flow, and that time remains on their side.

It must be acknowledged that Nemo are without a number of key players, though most clubs are managing similar absences at this time of year.

Éire Óg, meanwhile, make the short trip from Ovens with frustrations of their own. They sit on three points — one ahead of Nemo — but their defeat to Cill na Martra last time out halted what had looked like a steady upward curve.

Like Nemo, they have been competitive but inconsistent across full games, and they will view this evening as an opportunity to reassert themselves against one of the division’s traditional heavyweights.

Éire Óg are no longer a side feeling their way in Division 1, they now come to places like Trabeg expecting to compete. Their running game, when it clicks, can trouble any defence.

For both clubs, this game is a chance to try and build momentum — particularly for Nemo — to reset, and get themselves out of the drop zone.
